The body of a 71-year-old man was recovered from the Ottawa River near Rockland.

OPP divers found the body on August 25, three days after the man was last seen in the river.

Russell County OPP and the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) became involved on August 22 in a joint effort to find Jean-Guy Méloche, 71, of Ottawa, who had left an area hospital against the recommendations of medical staff. The OPS called the OPP for help in finding Méloche after his family reported him missing. He was last seen in the 700-block of Montreal Road.

OPP stationed in the City of Clarence-Rockland began a search of the Rockland area, which included checking the local marina located adjacent to Parc Du Moulin. Officers found Méloche at the marina.

Police attempted to take Méloche into custody but he jumped into the river. One officer then plunged into the water in an effort to rescue Méloche but was unable to find him after he had gone under.

Members of the OPS and OPP underwater search and recovery units searched that section of the river from Sunday until Tuesday when OPP divers found the body. Police investigation of the incident continues.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is doing a parallel investigation. The SIU becomes involved in police cases where a person has died. Three SIU special investigators and a forensic investigator are assigned to the case.

The SIU has invoked its mandate as lead investigation agency for the case so neither the OPS or OPP are allowed to provide more specific information on the matter. All inquiries go to the SIU communications branch at 416-622-2342.

Anyone who has information, including video evidence, related to the case that can help with SIU with its investigation is asked to call 1-800-787-8529. Video evidence may be uploaded through the SIU website at www.siu.on.ca.
