Ava saves more than goals this month

When Ava Lund-Fouquette dons her hockey gear, she has more than just goal saves on her mind.

Through the month of October, every save the Limoges 10-year-old makes will help raise money for paediatric cancer research and support. The delayed season start will not affect the amount of money raised, either; Ava’s save tally will include those made during practices and scrimmages.

The Casselman-Embrun Icedogs Atom goalie is participating in the October Saves campaign, in which goalies across North America raise money for cancer projects through either flat donations or pledges per save made. Last year, she made 108 saves and raised $536.60.

This year’s challenge will be slightly different. With the official competition delayed, Ava can count all practice and scrimmage saves while waiting for the season to begin. While the coach challenged her to take on the cause last year, Ava made the decision to take on this year’s challenge without prompting.

“I want to help kids fight cancer and let them feel better,” she said. “People can donate to me and they can count my saves for the whole month of October.”

The money raised locally will go to paediatric oncology research at the CHEO Research Institute. Ava’s mother Amber Lund said she was proud of her daughter’s efforts.

“Being a goalie is something Ava loves to do, and she recognises that not all kids are lucky and have their health and can do the things they love,” she said. “So every little bit counts, and she gets to do what she loves while helping kids and hopefully getting them back to doing the things they enjoy.”

At the time of publication, Ava had made 59 saves and raised $340. Her plan was to raise more than last year.
