Whiteout blamed for multi-vehicle accident
Blowing snow, creating a whiteout situation, is blamed for an 18-vehicle accident on County Road 17 near L’Orignal, Monday morning.
Emergency crews closed the highway between the Cassburn Road and Blue Corners Road intersections and diverted all traffic while emergency personnel dealt with the situation.
OPP reported 18 vehicles, including a couple of tractor-trailer transports, involved in the collision which occurred around 10:30 a.m., three kilometres east of the Blue Corners Road intersection, near the site of the L’Orignal Packing business.
Seven people were taken to hospital, three of them with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. At least eight of the vehicles were described as “severely damaged” while the others had minor damage.
The road was open for traffic again later in the afternoon.
Police had several collision reports from other locations in Prescott-Russell, but none of them as serious as the one near L’Orignal. Whiteout conditions due to blowing snow were also listed as a factor in those other accidents.
