Walking to support Alzheimer

Walking to support Alzheimer

“The walk is a wonderful opportunity for the community to show their support for the over 3,600 people across the five eastern counties living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia and their families” said organizer Jennifer Weeks.

The year’s event hopes to raise $10,000 for the cause and attract 100 to 125 participants. The proceeds from this year’s event will help fund Alzheimer Society support groups, education sessions, and recreational programs including the day program, Minds in Motion program and music program.

During the walk there will be a concert by country singer-songwriter Albert Bernicky, who will perform his song Fall In Love With You (All Over Again), inspired by his aunt and uncle’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to the walk component, this year’s fundraising event will feature a warm-up by Rockland Academy of Martial Arts, a photo booth, a wall of memories, prizes for the top fundraisers and a barbecue provided by the Cumberland Lions Club.

Walkers will also hear from guest speakers who will share powerful messages of unity, courage, support and hope. Those slated to offer remarks this year include Joanne Beda-Tansey, a member of the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District as well as Ginette Lecompte and Dan McLaughlin both of whom are living with dementia. They will be joined by Francis Drouin the Member of Parliament for Glengarry—Prescott—Russell, Patrick Brunet from Allea Marketing and Troy Morris the Division Director or IG Wealth Management.

Registration opens at 1:00pm and the opening ceremonies begin at 1:30pm. Walkers can register in advance online at www.walkforalzheimers.ca or at the door the day of the event. The fundraiser will finish after the barbecue at 4pm.
