Underwater makeover for Marina docks
The docks at L’Orignal Marina are getting an underwater makeover.
Champlain Township parks and recreation department has a company which specializes in marina improvement designs coming in to install a series of special underwater mooring anchors to the docks. The upgrade will cost about $37,000 and will result in a more stable docking facility at the marina for boaters.
“There is so much current there that the (existing) docks are always swaying,” said Lise Burroughs, parks and recreation director, during a phone interview. “This will be a permanent solution.”
The Manta Ray anchor system, which will become the new dock anchorage, uses a steel anchor point embedded in the river bottom. The anchor point is straight when it goes into the ground then unlocks so that a cross piece thrusts out sideways from the main anchor shaft. The weight of the riverbed above the anchor holds it in place against the current.
Burroughs explained in a report to township council that a simple concrete-block-and-cable anchorage setup was considered for the marina docks. The problem with that, she noted, is that when the water level of the river drops then there is a risk of damage to boat bottoms that bump against and slide over the top of the concrete blocks.
Installation of the new dock anchorage system will take place over spring, in time for the May long weekend opening of the marina.
