Township experiments with snowmobile crossing idea
Snowmobile tourism is a growing part of Russell Township’s winter economy and township council will experiment with a temporary access crossing idea to accommodate snowmobilers.
For the next winter season snowmobilers will be allowed to cross the Russell Recreational Trail at a point near the Campbell Pool outlet facility yard in the Embrun commercial park. The point will allow snowmobilers a link between popular trail routes within the municipality. Township staff waited until spring to survey both suggested sites. The Campbell Pool location was chosen for both safety and suitability needs.
“We all agreed that the snowmobile crossing on the recreational trail should be at the opening close to Campbell Pool,” stated Parks and Recreation Director Céline Guitard in a written report to council during its June 4 session. Council approved Guitard’s recommendation for a one-year trial period of the recreational trail crossing site for snowmobilers.
Earlier in the year representatives of the Eastern Ontario Snowmobile Club (EOSC) petitioned council for permission to have a crossing point on the recreational trail to allow access between riding trails within the municipality.
Both the Campell Pool location and a site near the OPP station were suggested. The one near the OPP station was the preferred one for the EOSC because it would offer riders closer access to the gas station and restaurants in the nearby shopping centre.
