Setting the bar high: St. Francis Xavier Basketball
“We’ve set the bar pretty high.”
Those were the words echoed by David MacKinnon, coach of the St. Francis Xavier high school senior women’s basketball team. “We’ve been champions for the past two years,” he said. “We’re going to try to make it three!”

The team managed to win their first championship in well over 10 years, dominating their Prescott-Russel Secondary School Athletic Association (PRSSAA) competitors. “We also won it last year,” stated the coach. “It’s the first time in this school’s history that the women’s basketball team has won it two years in a row.”
The 11 and 12 graders practice two to three times a week. “It’s a very big commitment,” stressed MacKinnon. “We have high expectations for our basketball program.”
Players include Chloe Lavalée, Caitlin Harmison, Jaymee Law, Sophie Colizza, Maylee Matchett, Giuliana Minoli, Elizabeth St.Hillaire, Kelande St. Hilliare, Kaitlyn Provost and Vicky Gauthier. The manager for the team is Olivia Groulx.
The team’s season is set to begin October 3, with a home game against the visiting Hawkesbury team. The game begins at noon.
St. Francis Xavier’s senior men basketball team, on the other hand, will begin playing in November.
