Local canoers participate in ontario cup series
On Sunday, September 30, 111 paddlers from 13 canoe clubs across Ontario and Quebec participated in the final Ontario Cup Series event for 2018, the OCup 4 - Long Distance Regatta. The Petrie Island Canoe Club (PICC), in Orléans, was represented by four local athletes.
Rockland’s Ben Davies, along with Emily Best, Tyler Chenette and Victor Savulescu from PICC, competed in several races throughout the Ontario Cup Series. The races varied between 12,000 metres, 16,000 metres and 20,000 metres.
The races were divided in various groups, depending on age and competition class and would set off at five-minute intervals, meaning that eventually the groups would be mixed together and everyone would be competing for the same piece of water and beach.
For the U15 Boys 12,000m race, Ben Davies finished in ninth place with a personal best time of 1.02.56. Tyler Chenette came in 11th place with a time of 1.03.01 and Victor Savulescu, not far behind, in 13th place with a time of 1.07.15. Emily Best finished in sixth place for the U15 Girls 12,000m race with a time of 1.10.34.
