Hawkesbury votes to allow retail cannabis sales
The Hawkesbury council voted unanimously on Thursday night to allow private cannabis stores to open in the Town.
Although the vote eventually passed unanimously, it did not happen without discussion. Councilors took the time to express certain concerns in allowing the retail sale of cannabis in Hawkesbury, most notably that it might not actually help diminish the black market.
Councilor Yves Paquette also expressed frustration regarding the fact that the province "dumped" this issue on municipalities to deal with.
Overall, however, the council agreed that the legalisation of cannabis is now a reality and it would be illogical, from a business standpoint, to turn away from such an opportunity.
Council had previously tabled this vote during the last meeting, on December 17, in order to gather more information before making a decision.
More details to come.
