Fire forces evacuation of seniors
All of the 31 seniors living at La Seigneurie apartment building were evacuated because of a late-night fire last Friday. Two of the residents at the seniors home in L’Orignal were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.
Fire fighter crews from the L’Orignal and Vankleek Hill stations in Champlain Township turned out to deal with the April 12 fire call. They were supported by a crew from the Hawkesbury municipal fire hall. Also attending were police, paramedics, and volunteers with the Red Cross and Prescott-Russell Victims Services.
Fire crews got the situation under control. Cause of the fire is still under investigation but the damage estimate for the 26-unit seniors apartment building is estimated at $2 million.
All of the seniors have been moved to temporary accommodations while the condition of the building is being assessed.
