Boxing Day Christmas Bird Watch invitation
Local naturalists and everyone looking for a reason to get outside during the Christmas break is invited to take part in the annual Christmas Bird Count in Prescott-Russell on Boxing Day.
The Vankleek Hill & District Nature Society (VKHNS) and le Club de miroise de l’Est ontarien (MiroisEont), which is working in partnership with le Club des ornithologues de l’Outaouais (COO) in Québec. Both host bird counts on Dec. 26 as part of the annual Boxing Day Christmas Bird Count exercise organized across Canada through various local naturalist and conservation groups.
The MiroisEont/COO bird count will cover terrain on both sides of the Ottawa River within a 25-kilometre area starting from a centrepoint in the Village of Alfred in Alfred-Plantagenet Township. It will include the woodland areas surrounding the villages of Fassett, Montebello, Papineauville and Plaisance in Québec and in Ontario the areas surrounding Alfred-Plantagenet Township. The VKHNS bird count will cover Champlain Township and neighbouring areas. Participants will record sightings of local birds like the Grey owl (see photo), including information on numbers, location, and time of sighting.
Participation in either event is free. Volunteers are urged to contact either group as soon as possible to register for participation and receive details on equipment to bring and time and place to meet for instructions before the start of the bird count.
